In the Apple’s latest Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update which was released this earlier this week quietly improved the protection against Trojan Backdoor which can allow hackers to take control over your precious iMac or MacBook. There was no information about this security update in the Mac OS X 10.6.4 release notes.
Apple has update XProtect.plist file which is the database of signatures of harmful threats to Mac. This will help and protect users from some Mac OS X viruses and malwares but not all.
Like Windows, Mac users are also affected by viruses and hackers. I don’t understand what are the reasons behind releasing a hidden security update in Mac OS X 10.6.4 looks like, Apple gonna use it for marketing purposes too 
Anyways, As a user you must carefully use your Mac and avoid installing unknown programs. By the way Install a good Antivirus too.
